Generally speaking, the alternator indicator should remain off when the alternator is generating power. If the alternator indicator lights up when the excavator engine is running, there may be a problem with the alternator. This article will explain how to diagnose the fault of alternator for reference only.
1. Stop the engine. Turn the key switch to the on position. Verify that the alternator indicator is on.
2. Measure the voltage between the terminals of alternator. If the measured voltage is about 24V, the alternator circuit can be considered normal. If the measured voltage is low, the fault may be due to insufficient battery capacity or loose wire connectors. When the voltage is 0 V, the wire between the fuse box and the alternator is loose or open. In addition, if the ground wire is open, the alternator cannot generate electricity.
3. Then, start the engine and measure the voltage generated by the alternator when it is rotating.
As described above, measure the voltage between the terminals next to the alternator. If the voltage is about 14V, the alternator works normally. If the rated voltage is not issued, there is some fault in the alternator or voltage regulator.
