Chain Wheel Sprocket in Excavator

A sprocket, sprocket-wheel or chain wheel sprocket is a profiled wheel with teeth that mesh with a chain, track or other perforated or indented material. The name 'sprocket' applies generally to any wheel upon which radial projections engage a chain passing over it. It is distinguished from a gear in that sprockets are never meshed together directly, and differs from a pulley in that sprockets have teeth and pulleys are smooth except for timing pulleys used with toothed belts.

Sprockets are used in bicycles, motorcycles, tracked vehicles, and other machines like excavators to transmit rotary motion between two shafts when gears are ineffective or to impart linear motion to a track, tape, or other object. The bicycle, which has a huge sprocket-wheel on the pedal shaft that drives a chain, which in turn powers a small sprocket on the axle of the rear wheel, is perhaps the most frequent form of sprocket.

Unlike tank sprocket, chain sprocket in excavator looks much easier than it is in tank.  Nevertheless, they do have something in common.

Frequently, the drive sprocket wheel is referred to as the drive star. It's a toothed wheel with a profile that fits the track. The motor-driven gear in tracked vehicles can be found in the front or rear of the vehicle, or in some cases both. A third, elevated rack might be used to drive the track. It's tough to conceive a crawler undercarriage that doesn't have a properly functioning drive sprocket wheel and idler. The driving sprocket wheels are constructed of hardened steel and are of high quality.
